This beauty is a coal/charcoal iron which was quite popular in the 19th century. Its predecessor, the sad iron (sad is an Old English word for solid) was also made of cast iron but cooled quickly which meant work had to stop while an iron was being reheated. A coal/charcoal iron allowed a person to iron longer without interruption before needing to be refueled. The vents around the iron on the top and bottom would fan the flames and keep air circulating to keep the coal/charcoal burning.
This nicely weighted cast iron coal/charcoal iron features a stunning figural sea serpent motif latch with rosette which keeps the hinged lid securely clasped. The handsome D-shaped handle is crafted from solid oak wood. With its gorgeous patina and exotic look-and-feel, this beauty will turn heads and make a statement as a decorative accent box in any modern home. It measures as follows:
Overall: 7½” x 4¼ x 9¾” W/D/H
Interior: 6½” x 3¼” x 3” (height taken with the grate removed)
Two pieces included: coal/charcoal iron and grate
Weight: 6 lbs. 5 oz.
We believe this was handcrafted in Europe (Germany) sometime between the early to mid 1900s. There is a makers mark (a Star of David) and a single digit number (4) on the lid’s underside. The patina is amazing, as is the overall condition of the iron with age-appropriate wear. There is a mended patch on the underside of the lid possibly dating to 100 years or so ago which does not affect it utility or beauty (see photo 12).
This beauty will delight an avant-garde decorator or perhaps be the perfect gift for someone who is a collector of antique irons.
