ADJUSTABLE ARCHITECT’S STAND WITH GILT-TOOLED LEATHER TOP, CONVERTING TO A WRITING TABLE
English, circa 1870
Oak, elm, pine and gilt-tooled leather
34 1/4" H (flattened) x 20" D x 33" W
A versatile architect or draftsman’s stand, the rectangular top is inset with a gilt-tooled black leather writing surface, adjustable with hinged props on the back dropping into grooves for use at various angles. Folding in the props allows the table to rest completely horizontal and function as a writing or occasional table. The height is controlled by a horizontal bar beneath the top that releases to allow the posts to ratchet higher or lower.
The trestle-form base is joined by turned stretchers and raised on small casters for mobility. The restrained joinery and honest, utilitarian craftsmanship typify the practical design aesthetic of the late Victorian period.
Condition: Missing the document bar that would attach to the two holes on the front edge of the top. Gorgeous overall patina with early surface and age-appropriate surface wear and marks for an actively used functional working table; veneer patch to front left corner of top; gilt tooling faint in places with cracks in the leather; joints tight and mechanically sound, though the ratcheting mechanism can be a bit fussy. Ready to place.
