Pablo Picasso ( 1881 - 1973 ) was a Spanish born painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, poet and playwright who spent most of his life in France. He is regarded as one of the most important and influential artists of The Twentieth Century. Exceptionally prolific throughout the course of his long life, Picasso achieved universal renown and immense fortune for his revolutionary artistic accomplishments, and became one of the most well known figures in 20th Century Art.
In 1961, a Polish-Jewish woman opened a small gallery in Polanco, a middle-class neighborhood in Mexico City. Over the following decade, the space became a cultural force hosting solo and group exhibitions of many influential artists of the time. That woman, Merl Kuper, immigrated to Mexico from Poland in the 1930's. She fled Poland escaping poverty and anti-semitism. Originally wanting to go to The United States, but the immigrant quota had been capped, so she headed south to Mexico. In pursuing her passion for the arts, she would put up a stand at the local Jewish community and sell work by artist friends. Then inviting people into the living room of her house to buy art informally.
Later in 1961, Galeria Mer-Kup opened its doors. The space would come alive with poetry readings, artistic workshops, talks of the arts, showcasing artworks by an impressive collective of artists including Diego Rivera, Pedro Friedberg, Jose Luis Cuevas, Salvador Dali, Alexander Calder, and Pablo Picasso among many others. At the time there were about 20 galleries in the city, but The Mer-Kup stood out because of its international scope. Kuper, who spoke Hebrew, Yiddish, Russian, Polish, Spanish, and English, drew connections with galleries and museums across The United States and Europe. The gallery became a critical window into Mexico City's Mid-Century cultural life.
