Vintage Mid-Century Modernist Copper Enameled Large Bowl by Franco Bastianelli for Studio Laurana Rame d’Arte, Florence, Italy (c. 1967)
A striking mid-century modern art piece, this large copper enameled bowl was designed by Franco Bastianelli for Studio Laurana Rame d’Arte in Florence, Italy. Handmade in a freeform shape, the copper bowl was hammered and flame-cut, then enameled in a stunning blend of vibrant colors.
This is a mid-century modern enamel on copper bowl, featuring a vibrant abstract or stylized design of a bird or insect. The color palette, with its rich greens, blues, and golds, along with the freeform organic shape, is reminiscent of the work of enamel artists such as Paolo De Poli (Italy), Sascha Brastoff (USA), or Bovano (USA).
A perfect example of the Brutalist movement, this bowl showcases bold artistry and craftsmanship from the 50s-1960s. Signed on the bottom, it reflects Bastianelli’s mastery in enamel techniques.

About the Artist – Franco Bastianelli (b. 1940, Pesaro, Italy)
Born in Pesaro, Italy, Franco Bastianelli studied at the Mengaroni Art School, where he was mentored by renowned sculptor Giuliano Vangi. In 1982, he received an honorary degree in Economics from Francesco Petrarca University in Los Angeles for his research on enamel techniques for both artistic and industrial applications.
A lifelong innovator, Bastianelli is a pioneer in the use of high-fired enamels, blending traditional craftsmanship with experimental materials and techniques. His diverse body of work has earned him the title of “The Enamel Artist”, with notable commissions such as his sculpture “Maternità”, acquired by Procter & Gamble for their Infasil product line.
Today, his artistic focus is primarily on sculpture, but his vintage enamel creations remain highly collectible and sought after.
