A vibrant procession of armored horsemen marches across these richly detailed hand-colored prints on silk, inspired by a 16th-century German Triumphzug (Triumph Procession) tournament manuscript. Each knight is depicted in elaborately plumed armor with heraldic banners and ornate caparisons, celebrating the theatrical pageantry of Renaissance chivalry.
The elongated, panoramic format and deep burgundy matting give the works a striking presence. This pair was professionally framed in Baltimore by David Bendann’s Fine Art Rooms, 1850–1940, original labels remain on the verso. They are perfectly suited for a study, library, or collector of historical militaria and costume illustration, and are ready to hang.
COLLECTOR'S NOTE
Renaissance court festivals transformed chivalry into theater, nowhere more vividly than in the German-speaking lands under Emperor Maximilian I. Lavish jousts and processions were recorded in richly illustrated tournament books, where armor became sculpture and horses wore embroidered velvet, plumes, and heraldic silks. The knights shown here echo that world of ceremonial pageantry rather than battlefield grit, capturing the ideal of Fürstlicher Pracht (princely splendor). Early 20th-century hand-colored prints like this reflected a renewed cultural investment in German Renaissance armor and costume studies, preserving the stylized elegance and martial romance of the 16th-century tournament tradition for modern collectors and historians.
THE PRINCIPALS PERSPECTIVE
Works like this reward both connoisseurship and strategy. While hand-colored silk prints of German Renaissance subjects already occupy a refined niche, this matched pair achieves exceptional distinction through its provenance.
The early 20th-century framing by David Bendann’s Fine Art Rooms, one of America's most respected art houses, lends institutional credibility and signals established collector stewardship. Comparable historical prints with reputable early framing routinely achieve strong results, often commanding up to $1,800 in a high-end gallery.
Offering them at this strategic valuation allows a discriminating buyer to acquire a visually dramatic and scholarly duo. These pieces represent an attractive long-term investment in documented provenance and collectible subject matter.
