Crafted … Read more This sculptural pottery tripod ewer, or gui, is designed in the style of vessels from the Chinese Neolithic period. Crafted from earthenware with a deep brown patina, the vessel rests on three hollow, bulbous legs supporting a rounded body. A tall, flared neck rises above the form and is pinched to create a spout, while a twisted rope-style handle gracefully connects the neck to the body.

The piece reflects the distinct aesthetic of early Chinese ceramic craftsmanship, often associated with the Dawenkou and Shandong Longshan cultures (circa 4000–2000 BCE). Such tripod ewers were traditionally used for ritual or ceremonial purposes and represent a foundational development in ancient Chinese pottery design that continued into the Bronze Age.
