This lovely dish is 10 inches across and can be used as a decorative accent or as a serving piece. It is a wonderful example of Wiinblad's most famous group of designs for Rosenthal, '1001 Nacht' (1001 Nights) introduced in 1969. It is whimsical and beautiful with a cobalt background and gold details.
Bjørn Wiinblad (20 September 1919 – 8 June 2006), was a Danish painter, designer and artist in ceramics, silver, bronze, textiles, and graphics. His work has been shown widely in Europe, the United States, Japan, Australia and Canada. Wiinblad was named Man of the Year in New York in 1985 and was awarded the American-Scandinavian Foundation’s Cultural Prize of 1995.
Wiinblad was an important designer for the Rosenthal porcelain company which was founded in Germany in 1879. He designed the popular Romance (Romanze) dinnerware and an annual commemorative Christmas plate for the company. In 1957, he was appointed Rosenthal's Chief Designer.
Museums the world over have Wiinblad's work in their collections. Among these are the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and Stockholm's National Museum.
