A pair of English creamware dessert dishes, very probably made at the Herculaneum Pottery, Liverpool, in the Regency period. Each has a broad rim molded with a basketweave ground and finished with a pierced fretted border beneath a scalloped edge, the edge and openings picked out in black. Within, a wide band of clear canary yellow encircles the plain cream center, hand-painted in dark sepia with a continuous garland of laurel sprays and framed by fine black lines and a black-and-white dot band. The soft, even crazing across the cream ground is characteristic of creamware of this age.

Openwork borders of this kind were difficult to model and fire, and dishes such as these were made for the dessert course. Yellow-ground creamware forms a small and distinctive group among early nineteenth-century English wares, and the combination of a colored ground with a molded and pierced border is unusual.

The yellow, black and cream palette sits comfortably with blue-and-white china and painted or country furniture. The pair works well hung on a wall or displayed on a mantel or shelf, and remains entirely usable for sweets, nuts or fruit at the table.
