Mid-Victorian Elegance: A Pair of British Engraved Glass Vases
This handsome Pair of British Engraved Glass Vases exemplifies the refined taste for clear, ornately decorated tableware during the mid-Victorian era, dating to circa 1865–1875.
Each vase features an elegant, classic baluster or ovoid form with a slightly flared rim and a sturdy, deeply moulded or cut pedestal foot. The smooth body of the glass serves as a canvas for delicate wheel-engraving, a skilled cold-working technique. The decoration is comprised of swags of grapes and foliage interwoven with other stylized flowers, a naturalistic and highly popular motif in the Victorian "Grand Period" (c. 1860–1885). The design is subtle yet intricate, creating a beautiful contrast between the clear, polished glass and the frosted, textured patterns.
Dimensions: Height: 10 inches (25.4 cm).
Historical Context:
The attribution of these vases to Britain in the decade following 1865 places them firmly in a period where glass manufacturers, particularly those in the Stourbridge region (like Stevens & Williams or Thomas Webb), were moving beyond the heavy cutting of the early Victorian era toward more sophisticated decoration. Engraving—both the expensive, deep wheel-engraving and the cheaper acid-etching, which was becoming more common—allowed for naturalistic motifs like grapes, vines, and ferns, which were highly fashionable extensions of the era's deep interest in botany and the natural world.
The dating and origin of this pair were specifically attributed by Arlene Palmer Schwind, formerly the esteemed curator of glass at the Winterthur Museum and a recognized authority on antique glass, affirming their place as fine examples of mid-to-late Victorian decorative glass artistry. These vases would have graced a mantelpiece or a formal dining room table, holding flowers or acting as purely ornamental centerpieces.
