Historical Significance – The Doctor’s Door Knocker
In Victorian Britain, physicians often employed distinctive brass knockers so they could be quickly identified by those seeking urgent assistance. The horizontally oriented hand-and-bar design became widely recognised as the “Doctor’s knocker.” The hand motif, often feminine and adorned with a ring, reflected Victorian tastes for symbolism and European artistic influence. The scallop shell, a classical emblem of protection, pilgrimage, and hospitality, adds further cultural resonance.
