A handsome set of 1940s California pottery with modernist styling and shapes. The field is a warm white hue with hand-painted ivy decoration of evergreen tone leaves and olive green/brown vines. Handles are in the same olive green/brown and are formed to resemble vines.
Released in 1946, this California Ivy pattern was one of the first patterns created for the "Poppytrail" line of dinnerware. The original company, founded by T.C. Prouty and his son, Willis had factories in both Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach, California. When the company first started, they produced architectural tiles. They then expanded to dinnerware and, in 1946, that production was purchased by Evan Shaw and renamed Metlox. One of the first patterns under the new ownership was the wildly popular "California Ivy" pattern which made the company an instant success. Later versions of the pieces were marketed and stamped with the Metlox brand name. Most of this set (dinnerware) appears to have been fabricated early in the pattern's history exhibiting manufacturer's marks before that name change was made. The cups and divided serving piece bear the later mark which included Metlox and were presumably purchased as an addition to the original pieces. The cream & sugar only have model numbers, no other marks.
