Produced circa 1970s, the piece captures the architectural presence and decorative richness that have made traditional Chinese censers enduringly popular with collectors and designers alike.

The rectangular vessel stands on four stylized feet and features upright loop handles flanking the body. The exterior is decorated with landscape reserves depicting mountains, water, and trees surrounded by geometric fretwork and scrolling ornament. A Greek-key meander border frames the upper rim, while the high-domed lid incorporates pierced ruyi-form openings designed to allow incense smoke to escape during use. Crowning the lid is a fully modeled guardian lion, often referred to as a Foo Dog or Shishi, rendered with a tightly curled mane, expressive features, and raised tail. The sculptural finial adds visual interest and symbolic meaning, as guardian lions have long been associated with protection, strength, and good fortune in Chinese decorative arts. Equally at home on a mantel, library shelf, console, or within a blue and white porcelain collection, this censer offers considerably more visual interest than the typical covered censer.

Inspired by much earlier imperial porcelains, this example should be appreciated as a well-executed 20th-century revival piece. The underglaze cobalt decoration displays confident hand-painted brushwork and attractive tonal variation, enhancing its decorative appeal from every angle.
