Mayan Melon Vessel, Late Classic Period.
Offered is an ancient Mayan vessel, bulbous melon form with wide slight flared rim, convex thin walls with 20 vertical ribbed channels, burnished cream slip painted, ink marked on verso "7435001."
Origin: Guatemala.
Period: 600-800 CE.
Material: Earthenware with pigment.
Measures: 8.5 D (6.25 D rim) x 4.5 H inches [21.59 D (15.88 D rim) x 11.43 H cm]
Weight: 1 pound, 14 ounces (850 g)
Provenance: Ex-Northern California private collection, active collector from the 1960s - 1980s, acquired from Bill Pearson - Fine and Primitive Art (FPA), 3499 Sacramento St, San Francisco, CA 94118, Circa 1970s. Private provenance available upon request.
