Antique Victorian Travel Vanity / Grooming / Toiletry Case — Dated 1854
A beautifully detailed Victorian travel vanity set, presented in its original black leather-covered case with green satin and velvet interior. The engraved silver-plate brush reads:
“Carrie Currier — Dec. 25th — 1854.”
Includes 10 pieces with silver-plate lids, most fitted to clear or leather-wrapped glass containers:
Two perfume bottles with Paris labels (Violet and Sweet Clover scents).
Two tall powder jars (one cracked, one labeled “Splendor” by Colgate USA).
Two squat jars, one with seed beads.
Rectangular glass vanity box.
Small inkwell (leather wrapped).
Silver-plate lint brush (engraved).
Other accessories include:
Mirror with protective satin mail holder cover.
Lift-out tray and hidden compartments.
Assortment of “white bone” grooming tools, dip pen with Estbrook Falcon nib, and tortoise shell comb.
Case measures 11.5″ L × 9″ W × 6.5″ H.
Condition: Leather case distressed with losses at corners; mirror intact; one cracked jar; missing three velvet-mounted implements. Lock present but no key. Lid sits slightly raised due to latch. All components show authentic age and patina consistent with mid-19th century use.
A rare and evocative Victorian lady’s (or gentleman’s) travel grooming case — ideal for collectors, display, or period décor.

The exterior leatherette covering exhibits flaking, edge losses, and corner abrasions consistent with mid-19th century travel use (see photos). Hinges and hardware remain intact; interior fittings show mild oxidation and surface wear but retain good structure. Mirror and bottles display expected age spotting and light residue. Overall sturdy and well-preserved for its age, with honest patina and a warm, timeworn character appropriate for display or gentle use. One of the larger taller jars is cracked. see pic. less
