Offered is a smashing monograph design book, "André Arbus: Architecte - Decorateur Des Annees 40" by Yvonne Brunhammer. André Arbus was a renowned 20th-century French architect, furniture designer, and sculptor known for reintroducing and modernizing the neoclassical aesthetic during the interwar period and subsequent reconstruction era post WW2.
He is known for his elegant, refined designs that blended classical influences with modern forms and luxurious materials. Arbus emerged in the 1930s as a leader of a renewed interest in French Classicism, often contrasting with the more rigid Modernist styles of the time. His furniture featured graceful lines and strong proportions inspired by the French Empire and Directoire periods. A third-generation cabinetmaker, Arbus focused on quality and comfort rather than elaborate ornamentation. He used high-end and exotic materials, such as rare wood veneers, parchment, lacquer, and bronze mounts. Arbus was a prolific and sought-after designer for both private and public projects. His government commissions included decorating interiors for French ministries and embassies, notably the French Embassy in Washington, D.C.. He also designed interiors for luxury ocean liners, such as the SS Normandie. We've sampled some of the images and illustrations above, and are duly obsessed with the incredible lines of his pieces.
