Engraving of Jesús Nazareno by Juan Antonio Salvador Carmona, dedicated to the Duke of Medina Celi, circa 1780–1795
A powerful and finely executed late 18th-century devotional engraving of Jesús Nazareno (Jesus the Nazarene), attributed to Juan Antonio Salvador Carmona (1740–1805), one of the most important Spanish engravers of the Enlightenment era. Rendered in exquisite detail, the image presents Christ bound and crowned with thorns, gazing forward in serene yet sorrowful composure. Around his neck hangs a symbolic scapular with Passion emblems, echoing Carmona’s signature attention to sacred iconography.
The full Spanish inscription reads:
“Jesús Nazareno, who is venerated in the Convento de P.P. Trinitarios Descalzos de Madrid. Dedicada al Excmo. Sr. Duque de Medina Celi y Santistevan, Caballerizo Mayor de la Reyna N.S. por Dn Juan Antonio Salvador Carmona, Grabador de Cámara del Rey Nro. Sr.”
[“Jesus the Nazarene, venerated in the Convent of the Discalced Trinitarian Fathers of Madrid. Dedicated to His Excellency the Duke of Medina Celi and Santistevan, Chief Equerry to Her Majesty the Queen, by Don Juan Antonio Salvador Carmona, Engraver to His Majesty the King.”]
The print measures 7.5” x 12” sight and is housed in a later custom frame with a black velvet mat and giltwood molding, 13” x 17” overall. The print exhibits period toning, minor foxing, and small surface blemishes consistent with age.
Carmona served as official royal engraver to King Charles IV of Spain, and his works were prized for their technical precision and solemn emotional depth. This piece, dedicated to one of Spain’s most powerful noble patrons—the Duke of Medina Celi—embodies the intersection of religious devotion, artistic mastery, and aristocratic patronage.
A rare and evocative example of Spanish religious printmaking from the golden age of Iberian engraving.
