I was immediately struck by how finely executed this charger is. The wirework is tighter and cleaner than most cloisonné plates of the era, and the goldstone ground glitters beautifully around the ho-o in natural light.

The phoenix (hō-ō) in Japanese art is derived from the Chinese fenghuang but takes on its own identity in the Meiji period, often paired with imperial or auspicious themes.
