Beautiful Art Nouveau water lily crumb catcher set in copper and bronze by Carl Deffner, 1900. Stamped Carl Deffner.
Carl Deffner (1856-1948) was born in Esslingen in 1856. His father, Carl Christian Ulrich Deffner, was the founder of the first "Metalwarenfabrik in Esslingen" and the first to bring the silver-plating process to Germany from Sheffield, England in 1810. In 1900, Carl Deffner took over his father's company. During the Art Nouveau period, "Carl Deffner Esslingen" was famous for producing copper, brass, and silver-plated items and was very innovative in creating new designs.
