foundry’s mark: “j.b. Deposee, bronze garanti paris,” dark brown patina.
standing on a rectangular black marble plinth. Between 1805 and 1808, canova created the world-famous sculpture “paolina bonaparte as venus victrix,” which depicts his sister-in-law paolina bonaparte reclining on a bed, scantily clad. The original white marble sculpture stands in the galleria borghese in rome. This is a high-quality recast in heavy bronze, probably from mid-20th century paris.
