Any male, regardless of birth or wealth, could achieve great success on based on his scholarly achievements. Many pieces of furniture and other smaller pieces were made for the literati class. This box with four drawers was probably made in the 1900's. The drawers are of good size and will hold a number of scholar objects such as ink, water droppers, numerous pieces of seals and paper.

The handle placed on the top of the box is a distinctive "bridge" shape that adds character to the box. The box was made in the traditional method of joinery, without nails. A series of dovetail joints held the top and sides together. Much of the joinery is covered by the lacquer finish, but one is visible in the last photo. See less
