Simple, elegant, clean lines are vocabulary of Ming style furniture not often found in later Chinese furniture of the Qing Period (CE 1644 - 1912) when the preference was for heavily ornately carved pieces. However, in the quiet countryside of Jiangnan, a name for areas south of the Yangtze River, a geographic area that include the provinces of Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Anhui and parts of Jiangxi, was home for many Chinese literati, who still practiced the ideals of Ming Dynasty, often reflected in their home furnishings. This pair of cabinets were once part of a long table where scholars practiced calligraphy and painting.
The cabinets are in their original condition with antique patina. They were constructed in the traditional method of using different joinery and without nails. The mahogany lacquer is the original finish. The only ornamentations are the carved corner pieces of the apron. Their tall height is perfect to be night tables as beds are higher today.

They are in good antique condition with wear and tear consistent with usage and age. A good waxing will definitely improve their appearance. The photos do show the wear. less
