A striking pair of hand-painted Italian majolica plates by Zaccagnini, Florence, c. 1940s–50s. Each plate features a central classical figure in silhouette with richly hand-applied 24k gold decoration, surrounded by a border of stylized laurel leaves and dots. The reverse is hand-signed “Z Italy” with model numbers, a documented Zaccagnini factory mark used during the company’s peak production for U.S. export.
Zaccagnini was founded in 1905 by Ugo Zaccagnini, a former sculptor for Richard Ginori, and became celebrated for its revivalist designs inspired by Etruscan and Renaissance art. Their pieces were carried by high-end retailers including Tiffany & Co. and Saks Fifth Avenue, and today remain sought after by collectors of fine Italian ceramics.
