Created during the second half of the 18th century, this paperolle reliquary is part of French sacred art. It contains the relics of Saint Secundina, a 3rd-century Virgin Martyr who died by scourging during the persecution under the reign of the Roman Emperor Trajanus Decius.

Meticulous in craftsmanship and of stunning visual quality, paperolle reliquaries are created by cutting and folding paper into Baroque and religious shapes. Covered with gold paint, it gives the illusion of metal. It is a true gem of 18th-century religious craftsmanship, surviving in beautiful condition.

Protected by a transparent glass pane and a black wooden frame, probably repainted black during the 19th century to reflect the Empire style, which combined gold and deep black.
