It is shocking to recognize that this piece of furniture was made by moulding ash or birch plywood. This process was utilized to deal with the after effects of the Pacific war in world war 2 . There was
a rattan shortage. Yet there was no shortage of applications of bent plywood. In this case ash. A streamline form with the bend to 2 rails seperated by a round plywood washer for structural integrity . The seat cushion is a metal / wood frame aka boxspring all metal. The war was over. I also enjoy the bowed top on the back. This is visual illiteration. There is a bow employed there. New fangled brass phillips head screws were also used on this chair. No staples though. 3 bent arches on each side of the arms. I am attributing the design to Paul Frankl. I have included 2 photos of docuemented Ficks Reed work. The bent plywood is the same as the chairs. There is even a Ficks Reed tag. The structure of Frankls designs are more parsimonious involving structural components such as springs and the use of philips head screws.
So if you want some streamline swank in your home. Buy them and enjoy them. So as a foot note I was at the upholsterers shop today looking over my petite 3 piece sectional with black cushions and voila same wood as my pair of chairs. Labeled Ficks Reed. The chairs have no labels.
