Each plate is exquisitely painted with rich raised 24k gold and polychrome enamels with the letter E initial on the center medallion indicating provenance which would have been an imperial family or an important chinese official since these plates were always highly valued and only affluent individuals could afford to own them and especially have them personalized with initials .
