A finely worked Chinese export sterling silver matchbook cover by the renowned Hong Kong silversmith Wang Hing & Co. The front and back are chased in high relief with writhing dragons above waves, symbols of power and good fortune. One end remains open to insert a standard book of matches, while the opposite end has an oval thumb slot for easy removal, a clever early 20th-century adaptation for the popular new matchbook form. Maker’s mark for Wang Hing is stamped on one end. A striking accessory of daily use that doubles as a collectible objet d’art, ready to add flair to your bar, desk, or collection.
COLLECTOR'S NOTE: Wang Hing was the leading maker of Chinese export silver from the late 19th to early 20th century, producing luxury silver for the Western market.
