Item description:
a stunning majolica ceramic vase, entirely handmade on a potter's wheel and decorated entirely by hand with floral motifs. Complete with a lid featuring a fruit-shaped knob, signed under the base with an antique hand-painted mark. This is a very distinctive mark, which we have never seen before. "sdc-ad" written in capital letters similar to those used in 18th-century ceramic marks. The style is definitely that of the cities of albissola or savona, therefore ligurian ceramics, very similar to the vases made by giacomo boselli. The ceramic and glaze are also quite old, and the patina under the base is from a piece from the 1800s. In our research, we have found many ceramics, illustrated in various books dedicated to giacomo boselli, which have the exact same floral decoration as our vase. We have also found several vases with a shape very similar to ours, albeit with different decorations, attributed to the same artist, demonstrating that this is an antique vase that can definitely be attributed to the school of giacomo boselli.
useful information for evaluating the item:
regarding the evaluation of the item, our internet research has found a pair of vases estimated by pandolfini at €1,000-€2,500, at the auction "works and objects of ancient and contemporary art, jewelry," lot number 507, entitled "pair of vases with lids by jacques boselly (giacomo boselli 1744-1808)." then we found a single vase, again with the same shape as ours, also estimated by pandolfini at €1,200-1,800, at the auction "furniture, majolica and art objects" on december 11, 2024, lot 193 entitled "vase with lid, savona, giacomo boselli (?), second half of the 18th century." finally, we found a small vase, only 11 centimeters tall, with a different shape from ours, but with floral decorations and colors very similar to our vase, valued at €400-500 by the cambi auction house, at the "majolica and porcelain" auction on december 19, 2017, lot number 82, entitled "small savona wine cooler vase, manufactured by giacomo boselli, 1768–1780."
