This bronze buddha head is atypical in it's size and quality, most of the heads are much smaller and large ones are rarely seen. The buddha's head is well finished in typical South East Asian Sukhothai style with beautiful facial features with thin lips and well figured twisted hair knots with flaming finial typical of Thai buddhas. We believe the bronze to be the head off a 14th or 15th century buddha figure, with heavy casting, that was mounted on the wooden base sometime in the middle of the 20th century.

Provenance: The Head was purchased from the Estate of a Lenox Massachusetts Collector of early Asian art. For a comparable but slightly larger example See Rago Arts and Auction Galleries, Lot 2554 April 07 2018.

Condition: Good, typical age wear and flaws in casting of an early bronze.
