A striking antique Japanese Imari porcelain charger, richly hand-painted in a bold palette of cobalt blue, iron red, green, and gilt. Dating to the late Meiji to early Taishō period (circa 1900–1920), this generously sized piece—14.25 inches in diameter—features 3 figural reserves, each depicting courtesans in flowing robes, rendered with expressive detail and graceful posture.
The composition radiates from a central floral medallion of chrysanthemums and butterflies, framed by a cobalt border. Alternating figural panels and geometric lattice sections create a dynamic visual rhythm, enhanced with peony blossoms, and gilt scrollwork. The back is decorated with underglaze blue foliage and bears a red seal mark within a recessed foot ring.
Beautifully balanced and highly decorative, this charger showcases the refined artistry of Japanese export porcelain at the turn of the 20th century. A captivating statement piece, it is ready to add history, color, and cultural depth to your decor. Stand not included.
✨ Collector’s Note
The presence of courtesans, most likely referencing the "Floating World", alongside symbolic chrysanthemums speaks to classical Japanese ideals of beauty, refinement, and seasonal transition. Figural Imari chargers of this scale and detail were luxury items even in their time and remain prized today by collectors and designers alike.
