A finely carved 19th-century articulated artist’s mannequin, Continental European, likely French or German, dating circa 1860–1880. Measuring 16.5 inches high, this beautifully rendered lay figure was designed as a studio tool for academic artists, allowing for study of human anatomy and proportion in a wide range of poses.
Hand-carved from solid wood with a warm natural patina, the figure features pegged joints at shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, and ankles, all of which move smoothly and hold position with integrity. The face is delicately modeled with almond-shaped eyes and subtle features, suggesting an individualized rather than purely schematic form—a characteristic of earlier and better-quality lay figures.
All joints are tight and fully functional. There are no splits, losses, or restoration. Minor age-appropriate wear enhances the character of the piece. It displays beautifully standing, seated, or posed in motion. A striking decorative object as well as a historic studio tool—perfect for collectors of academic art, antique tools, or folk sculpture.
