Set of four Chinese porcelain dragon cups, a finely formed and potted, matching set of four teacups with an imperial … Read more Set of four Chinese porcelain dragon cups, a finely formed and potted, matching set of four teacups with an imperial yellow, glazed exterior, interior and inset base. The rims of the lip and base are glazed in gold. The exteriors are decorated with two, red, five-clawed dragons amid polychrome auspicous clouds (xiangyun and flames with gold highlights and a band of polychrome, Lingzhi, Ru Yi lappets at the feet also accented in gold highlights. A green and gold, six character, Chenghua, reign mark with double ringlets, and surrounded by a band of lappets that repeats that of the foot, is glazed onto the inset bases. Circa Republic of China era or later.

xiangyun: Cloud motifs are rooted in agrarian culture of the Chinese people. Clouds are associated with good luck as the cloud makes rain which moisten all things, and therefore, it brings good fortune to people. In Chinese language, clouds are called yun (云; 雲; yún) which is a homonym for the Chinese character yun "good fortune" (运; 運; yùn). In Chinese culture, clouds (especially the five-coloured clouds) are perceived as an auspicious sign (e.g. an omen of peace, a symbol of Heaven, and the expression of the Will of Heaven.
