This piece of furniture is a historic armchair attributed to the austrian architect and designer gustav siegel.
it is model no. 715, designed around 1900 for the renowned viennese furniture factory j. & j. Kohn. This model was presented at the 1900 paris world's fair and demonstrates a successful combination of art nouveau and functionality.
the chair is made of bent beechwood, stained reddish-brown, and varnished. The construction exhibits the elegant lines typical of viennese art nouveau: the semicircular, curved backrest frame flows seamlessly into the front legs, visually and structurally enclosing the seat.
particularly noteworthy is the original upholstery of the seat and backrest, covered in a floral tapestry fabric in warm beige and gold tones. The textile covering of the backrest is edged on the inside with decorative nails, lending the chair an additional handcrafted quality. The striking lower cross braces and double-curved frames under the seat not only provide stability but also add a decorative touch. The front legs are capped by flat brass feet, emphasizing the original quality of this piece.
condition: the chair is in good, museum-like condition with a beautiful patina. The wood shows occasional signs of wear, such as minor scratches, dents, and loss of shine, which, however, are consistent with the age and authenticity of the piece. The upholstery is original and evenly preserved, with only slight signs of age-related wear. The construction is stable; the piece is overall very well-maintained and ready for display or careful use.
