A striking postmodern ceramic studio vase featuring an undulating sculptural form and deep black high-gloss glaze. One side of the vase is defined by ribbed vertical texturing that is a mottled black green glaze (see last 2 photos), while the opposing surface twists in smooth, black overlapping bands—creating dynamic visual movement from every angle. The piece is finished with a clean oval mouth and unglazed pontil marks on the base, indicating hand-thrown or hand-finished studio production, most likely an American or European studio.
This dramatic vessel evokes late 1980s to early 1990s design sensibilities with its bold form and monochromatic sheen, making it a perfect fit for modernist, contemporary, or eclectic interiors. Display it solo as a sculptural object or as a statement vase.
COLLECTOR'S NOTE:
The twisted, ribbed surface reflects postmodern design’s fascination with exaggeration and play. In the 1980s, studio potters often borrowed from architecture and fashion, pushing clay into sculptural forms that challenged the vase’s purely functional role. This piece is as much about silhouette and texture as it is about holding flowers.

On the underside, there is a small surface irregularity that may appear as an abrasion, but is actually the result of kiln ash or a glaze pop—both common characteristics of hand-fired studio pottery. These subtle imperfections are typical and often serve as identifying markers of authentic studio-made ceramics. less
