The image is actually carved from a hardened foam type material but looks like wood. No detail was spared. The rugged surface seems to be roughly hand hewn. The dynamic carving has dramatic dimension from every viewing angle. The facial and figural features of both the man and horse are expertly rendered. Gold, black and red accents of the flag, saddle, and wardrobe radiate off the earthy faux wood. This sculpture is sometimes referred to as Don Quixote – yet that reference is open to interpretation. Vanguard Studio’s label and date, 1967 appear on the back side. The lightweight foam material makes this relief sculpture easy to mount.
