Circa 1815 Pair of Chinese Export Porcelain for the American Market Armorial Dessert Plates. From one of two services made for Joseph Smith of Philadelphia (1770-1845), a prosperous merchant with trading interests in India, China, Ireland, and Germany. A rare American market ‘armorial’ service piece, the coat of arms, according to Angela Howard “was almost certainly assumed without official permission”, see Howard’s Chinese Armorial Porcelain, Vol. II, pg. 660. Provenance: H. Moog, Atlanta; Henry Moog, a revered expert of Chinese export porcelain. Each retain the original Moog label, description & price of $2,800/each. The label bears an error "Robert Smith", instead of "Joseph Smith", which has been established subsequently as the correct original owner.
