18th century French elegantly hand carved tall case clock .
An elegantly hand-carved 18th century Ile de France tall case clock in cherry and oak with beautifully carved panel doors, a graceful arched top, which the French call a “chapeau de gendarme” or “policeman’s hat”, and classic French drop pin hinges. The case, which was carved nearly 300 years ago, shows age but retains its sumptuous beauty and rich, warm patina. The clockwork is fitted with a cast bronze and enamel face with hand-painted Roman numerals and retrofitted with a modern, battery-operated quartz movement, making it easy to maintain.
The decorative bronze clock face surround depicts a trio of eagles majestically perched with wings displayed and inverted. Golden eagles are heraldic symbols of the Imperial French Empire. The clock was carved in 1725 during the height of French Regency, one of the most beautiful periods of French furnishings.
The clock was sourced from a palatial and beautifully appointed home in Stamford, Connecticut, and was purchased by the homeowners for $6,400.00.
