About this poster: This striking poster was created by Yves Bonnat in 1953 to promote the 3e Gala de la Presse Étrangère, held on March 12th at the Théâtre de Paris. The event, taking place during the traditional French Mi-Carême (Mid-Lent) celebrations, featured a vibrant mix of spectacle, ball, and tombola, and was held under the presidency of the French President at the time, Vincent Auriol.
The poster’s whimsical and modernist design reflects the festive spirit of the occasion, with bold, stylized faces in costume and a newspaper hat evoking the international press. The gala was a charitable and social event that brought together foreign correspondents and the Parisian elite, and it also served to reinforce France’s cultural diplomacy in the postwar era.
