This listing is for a rare antique world time zone clock. This is a very early example dating to the early 19th century. Though international time zones weren’t officially established until 1884, the concept of world time zones existed for hundreds of years prior.
This world time zone clock was most likely based upon a design created by Zacharias Landteck and Johann Baptist Homann, circa 1705.
This design features a 24 hour dial with 12 hours for morning (am) on one side and 12 hours for evening (pm) on the other. Another inner dial with cities and empires from across the globe (including Peking, Mughal empire, Persian empire) turns through the day. A single hand points to the current time.
The center bar was probably stamped later on, as it is a different font and indicates Greenwich vs New Zealand time. New Zealand Standard Time zone is 12 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. This was officially established in 1868.
This clock has a time only skeleton movement. It runs on a single weight and comes in an early pub/tavern style case.
The clock has a nice silvered dial, which gives a warm contrast to the brass movement.
The weight driven movement was also serviced in 2022. It ran when recently tested
Measures about 16 x 45.5 x 7.25 inches
This clock appears to be in overall good condition.
Some signs of normal wear and age present, including some minor fading on the lower part of the case.
Please note that any mechanical clock that is moved or shipped might require adjustments upon arrival and thus time accuracy/running cannot be guaranteed. Chairish sells clocks solely to be intended for display. The mechanical elements are not guaranteed to be in working order by Chairish.
