An extraordinary 24-inch Japanese cloisonne enamel charger, featuring an elegant tableau of cranes and bamboo—symbols of longevity, peace, and natural harmony—set against a luminous cerulean blue ground. The scene is hand-enameled with refined detail and subtle shading, echoing the aesthetic precision of early 20th-century Nagoya-area workshops.
The reverse is equally decorative, with scrolling karakusa vines and a stylized cherry blossom medallion over turquoise enamel—hallmarks of Meiji to Taisho period cloisonne Though unsigned, the quality and scale suggest the hand of a highly skilled artisan trained in the tradition of premier studios such as Ando or Hattori. A serene and commanding piece, ideal for wall display or as a sculptural focal point in a curated interior.
COLLECTOR'S NOTE
While cranes and bamboo are well-known auspicious motifs in Japanese art, their use in large-format cloisonné chargers of this scale and coloration is comparatively rare. The reverse’s karakusa pattern and floral medallions help date the piece to the transitional period between Meiji and Taisho (c. 1900–1920). This piece’s blue ground—more vibrant than the darker tones used in earlier export cloisonné—reflects evolving Western tastes during the turn of the century.
THE PRINCIPAL'S PERSPECTIVE
Oversized Japanese cloisonne works—especially those with painterly figural scenes on colored grounds—are increasingly scarce, as many were damaged in shipping or lost to time. This charger’s size, condition, and reverse detailing place it in a premium tier for collectors and designers alike. As large-scale Japanese cloisonné continues to appreciate, this piece represents not just a decorative asset, but a sound investment in early 20th-century enamel artistry.

The reverse shows minor enamel loss (see last photo), typical of early 20th-century cloisonné and consistent with age and use. This subtle wear is often accepted within the Japanese aesthetic and may even reflect how the piece was originally finished. less
