A whimsical example of Japanese Sumida Gawa pottery, this moon flask-form basket vase is adorned with three playful children—two riding … Read more A whimsical example of Japanese Sumida Gawa pottery, this moon flask-form basket vase is adorned with three playful children—two riding what appears to be a raft over stylized waves on the front, and a third peering curiously from the reverse. The figures are applied in high relief, a hallmark of the Sumida style developed around 1890 by the Seto potter Ryosai I.
This vase features its signature thick drip glaze in earthy brown, blue, and creamy white, flowing from the handle over the top of the body. The lower portion is left unglazed and painted in a rich red tone, typical of Sumida ware. Unsigned, as is common for many pieces of this period, this sculptural work captures the spirited character of early Sumida pottery.
