Guillermo Silva Santamaria (known as Silva 1921-2007)) was a Painter, sculptor, engraver and writer, born in Bogata, Colombia. He studied various art techniques under the French painter Pierre Daguet in 1937 and had his first one-man show in Bogata in 1953. He studied engraving at the Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado in Mexico City in 1956, and then later at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri where Atelier 17 printmaker Fred Becker was teaching experimental intaglio techiniques. He also studied in Paris at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure in Paris.
El Enano (1961) demonstrates a unique Guernica attitude of gruesomeness as social commentary
using his intaglio technique which he mastered.
Guillermo Silva has exhibited widely throughout Latin America including: The Bogotá Museum of Modern Art, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Brooklyn Museum, the Jewish Center of San Diego, the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, the London Museum, Museum of Modern Art in New York, La Escuela Nacional de Belles Artes Arango (The National School of Fine Arts, Arango) in Bogata, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Santiago Museum of Contemporary Art, among others.
