Pair of Armchairs – Designed by Károly Nagy, Hungary, 1940s
This pair of armchairs is attributed to Károly Nagy, one of the notable figures in Hungarian mid-century furniture design. Created in the 1940s, these pieces reflect the transition from interwar modernism to postwar functionalism, capturing a moment where tradition met innovation. Their proportions, structural clarity, and meticulous craftsmanship embody the refined balance of comfort and form that defines Nagy's work.
The frames are crafted from solid cherrywood and have been carefully restored to preserve the original character of the wood. The surface was treated with natural oil—no lacquer or wax—enhancing the grain while maintaining authenticity. The armrests are smoothly contoured and hand-polished, following the natural shape of the forearm, showcasing the artisan quality of the design.
The seating and backrest feature their original coil-sprung structure, which has been fully restored using traditional upholstery techniques. These include jute webbing, hessian (afrika), cotton wadding, and steel springs, ensuring both historical accuracy and lasting comfort. The chairs are newly upholstered in a premium Belgian bouclé fabric, chosen for its soft, tactile quality and period-appropriate texture.
A defining visual element is the gently inclined backrest, supported by horizontal cherrywood slats that offer both structural integrity and a rhythmic design feature. The back cushions are button-tufted, referencing mid-century modern detailing.
The restoration process was museum-grade in scope and quality. Every joint was reinforced, every spring retied, and every layer of upholstery rebuilt using historically correct materials and methods. This careful process ensures the chairs retain their original identity while offering durability for contemporary use.
with their clean lines and functional elegance, these armchairs exemplify the post-Kozma Hungarian modernist idiom, where Bauhaus influences blend seamlessly with local traditions and materials. Ideal for refined interiors and discerning collectors, this rare pair offers timeless sophistication rooted in regional design heritage. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
