The surface … Read more Stunning, tall antique Japanese bronze vase dating from the Meiji period (late 19th through the early 20th century). The surface has a fine iridescent gilding typical of much metalwork from this period. (The fine granular gold iridescence is apparent on magnification.) The subject is a wrythen dragon with 3 claws (or toes) rising among clouds in cast relief decoration. This sculptural work of art is perfect for the collector but is versatile as a decorative vase as well. It is tall and heavy enough to display large flowers or branches. And we love the stylized dragon motif — very modern in form and composition with both an Art Nouveau and Art Deco feel. This would work well in both traditional and modern interiors.

The vase is in good antique condition with the typical wear associated with age and use. The surface has some minor small dimples and scratches that do not detract from the piece, and the gilding remains intact over the surface. A super piece!
