It is one of 3 recent purchases of antique French Art Nouveau lithographs from a botanical collection that dates to 1896. ( The others are all of the same purple tone color and work well together. Contact us for combined shipping if interested in more that one of the grouping.) This lithograph features the POPPY plant. It came from a portfolio of hand colored pochoirs by Eugene Grasset ( a Mucha contemporary) and illustrated by M.P. Verneuil, a student of Grasset, who was influenced by Japanese aesthetics. Grasset is best known for his Art Nouveau graphic designs and motifs. He used the pochoir technique of applying gouache with hand coloring using stencils. As a printing medium, the craftsmanship aspect of pochoir is its most valuable attribute. However, it was also its greatest economic challenge as it was labor intensive and time consuming, expensive and slow. As a result, this technique was short lived and was replaced by faster, more modern lithography techniques. Thus, pochoirs have become rare and highly collectible with the passage of time. This poppy botanical pochoir features soft color tones of vivid purples/lavenders and greens set against a soft cream background. It is in pristine condition. Image size is 10 x 14.5 inches. It comes matted in a neutral 16 x 20 inch custom mat, ready for a standard size frame. Please allow time for custom matting. See less
