This antique low bookcase is an exemplary piece of Chinese country furniture. It appears understated but reflects the design aesthetics and craftsmanship of Ming dynasty (CE 1368 -1644)regarded as the golden age of Chinese furniture. Clean lines, balance, proportion and lack of excessive ornamentation are the hallmarks of Ming furniture. All of these can be found in this two tiered openwork bookcase. The only but most important feature is the open lattice work that ornate each of the six openings, two on each sides and two long ones in the front and beaded edges throughout.
The bookcase was constructed with traditional methods with mortise and tenon and several kinds of joinery and no nails involved. A very interesting V shape joint is placed on the mitered corners to keep the wood together. Elm wood with its interesting wood grains is used on the frame while lesser woods were used on the shelves and top.
The elm bookcase speaks of elegance and refinement within its rustic looks. I found this piece in one of the buying trips to China and kept it hidden from the showroom or website when I was at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago. Its small size is useful and can fit in small places. The two shelves can hold books or display collectibles. Children can reach out for books and toys from the low shelves. It was a functional piece of furniture in a scholar's studio for books and scholar objects, and it again works as an useful piece of furniture in the modern home.
