Elegant and refined pair of round English porcelain tureens with lids, crafted in the Victorian style. Made of fine white porcelain, they are adorned with delicate transferware decorations and enriched with genuine gold accents on the robust handles and ornate floral finial. These finely detailed decorations are arranged with great aesthetic sense; the color combination—orange, blue, white, and gold—is both subtle and exquisitely refined. The tureens feature the classic rounded Victorian silhouette—well-proportioned and understated—with two sturdy handles for a secure grip and moderate dimensions suitable for refined table settings. Based on their stylistic and structural characteristics, they were most likely produced in Burslem, near Stoke-on-Trent, in Staffordshire—a historic area renowned for its ceramic and porcelain production. While they bear no maker’s mark, they were almost certainly created in a small artisan workshop. The owner did register the design, as evidenced by the presence of a “Registration Mark” on the underside of each tureen, indicating the official registration date: January 10, 1855 (see photo). This mark is documented on pages 526–527 of the Encyclopaedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks. The transferware technique, highly fashionable during the Victorian era, involved applying engraved designs from copper plates onto glazed ceramic using a special transfer paper. The pattern was pressed onto the surface and the piece was then glazed and fired. This printing process was first developed by John Sadler and Guy Green in Liverpool in 1756. One of the two tureens features an interesting and rare period repair (highlighted in photos): the floral finial, likely detached at some point, was reattached using an unknown material passed through its center and secured beneath the lid, near the mark. The result is a nearly invisible and skillfully executed restoration. The tureens are in good overall condition. Dimensions: Width 28 cm, Diameter 26 cm, Height 18 cm (11 in × 10.2 in × 7 in approx.). We use custom packing materials for all our shipments (wooden crates, polystyrene, etc.) to ensure maximum protection and safety of each item.
