This is an unusually large statement piece, a Bombe Chest or Commode. It has a handsome burl wood veneer, nine dovetail joinery drawers with carved cartouches, and gilt bronze ormolu pulls on each. The top three drawers have removable partitions, the escutcheons on each drawer are a simple keyhole shape, and the original key is included. It has a rose-toned set-in marble top, four scroll-carved cabriole legs, and a subtle, scalloped carved skirt to echo the cartouches on the drawers. The two sides of the chest have carved cartouches that are trimmed with carved roses and acanthus leaves. It has a very transparent light taupe-toned wash throughout.
The same family has owned it since at least the 1960s, as shown in the photograph from the April 1968 issue of House and Gardens, which featured the owner's home (the chest is on the far left).

One escutcheon is missing from the center top drawer, and chips here and there are to be expected of a piece over 100 years old. We have lived with it this way for decades, covering the crack in the marble with trays and decorative pieces. However, it could be repaired with a board matched to the chest, dividing the two sides of the marble. This fantastic piece is priced with the flaws considered. Please review all the photos. less
