A little about the artists:
FRED AND MARILYN BUSS BIO (the following information is a complete reprinting taken from one of the artists' brochures):"Fred and Marilyn Buss have been involved in handcrafts since they graduated from college. In 1971 they became interested in a simple band sawn box form. They have developed the concept into a fanciful organic style of box, and have become known for their fine selection of woods and beautifully finished pieces. Fred's interest in and appreciation for wood have led them to become more involved in harvesting, milling and seasoning hardwoods and burls for future projects. They take special satisfaction in salvaging trees damaged by storm, fire or "progress." Fred and Marilyn are currently developing a solar wood drying kiln. These sculptural boxes begin with the selection of fine hardwoods. Some are imported from around the world, some are natives of Northern California, which Fred gathers and mills himself. After the wood is properly seasoned - which may take several years, he designs and band saws solid pieces into the rounded, flowing box forms. The pieces are shaped and smoothed by a series of techniques Fred and Marilyn have developed in their 20 years of box making experience. After much sanding the boxes are soft and smooth to the touch. They are finished with a Danish-type oil and wax treatment and are buffed to a lustrous shine. The boxes may be kept beautiful by an occasional hand buffing with a soft cloth. An application of a good quality, clear furniture oil or wax is advisable every four to six months, depending on the wood. They should be kept from exposure to strong direct light, heat and moisture."
