France, 60s
Charles Cart founded the Poterie du Cyclope in 1948 in Annecy-le-Vieux, Haute-Savoie region of France. Self-taught, he began experimenting with glazes and pottery techniques. He discovered how bubbles formed in the outer layer, which partially detached during the cooking processes, forming craters and allowing the black and white inner layers to be seen, reminiscent of the eruption of a volcano. In 1963 he created the Le Cyclope brand (the name comes from the Rocher du Cyclope, a nearby mountain). The finish of this vase, as the label says, is the “Émaux des glaciers” glaze (shiny ice blue with white foam effects), one of the patented glazes, in addition to “Émaux des Neiges”, “Émaux des Garrigues” and “Émaux Terre de Feu”. These glazes, so innovative at the time, were very influential in later German ceramics. This piece has an attribution mark,
