TIFFANY- 3 PIECE French Empire-style mantel clock and candelabra set. Purchased from Sotheby’s. Popular during the early 19th century. Gilt bronze (ormolu) and enamel -features elaborate designs inspired by classical antiquity. The figures flanking the clock face are typical of the Neoclassical style, which was in vogue during the Empire period.
French Empire clocks were not just timekeeping devices but also symbols of wealth and status. They were often placed in prominent positions in the home to impress guests.
